I met Mavis at the GEC on my first day at work after leaving school in 1969. Whilst we weren't always working in the same department, our paths continued to cross over the 24 years that I worked at the company. I came to realise that Mavis's very professional and business-like façade concealed a very warm and likeable person. Eventually I was lucky enough to work more closely with Mavis for a while and when I left the GEC we still had an occasional "catch-up" on the phone. Day-to day life tends to get in the way, so we didn't speak as often as I intended. I think that we last spoke almost a year ago, so although I knew that she was fragile, it still came as a shock when I was informed of her passing. I have only good memories of Mavis and will miss our long catch-up conversations.
