Such a sad time having to come to terms with the passing of the eldest of the Chivers cousins. Have always 'looked up' to Cousin David, which wasn't difficult in my case, and together with his larger than life outlook on such a diverse range of topics, he will be sorely missed by us all.

I've know David forever, saw my first gibbon at his PhD field site in Malaysia and then had many a later contact at meetings of the Primate Society of Great Britain. I will miss him a lot. Caroline

David changed primatology for a generation. He was passionate about primate conservation and using his position at Cambridge to help train some of the world’s most eminent primatologists, including from habitat countries. He did this though in his own special way. He had very strong opinions, but didn’t make others feel small. Also some of those opinions, including the role that international societies should play in conservation, needed to be heard. He had the most brilliant humour. He loved cats and wine and port! He had the most marvellous tie collection. And he could give the same talk every year in a way that like a child, every student wanted to hear the story again and felt disappointment when he left out a key part. I am so honoured to have known David. He deeply influenced my career, he gave wonderful advice on my research, and he was always adorable to my cats and dogs. He will never be forgotten. He is a legend to the field of primatology. The world won’t be the same without him and the substantial changes he made will have impact for long to come.
