When we arrived in Betley over twenty years ago, we were lucky to find not just a neighbour but a true friend in John Edge. What began with shared football loyalties — black and white and red and white — quickly grew into years of conversation, laughter and loyal friendship.

He was generous to a fault with our family. Our children grew up knowing him and thought the world of him. He was always there with a joke, a story, an opinion or a piece of Potteries wisdom. He loved good food, good wine and good company, and time with him was always wholehearted.

Proud of the Potteries yet curious about the wider world, he shared his knowledge lightly and with humour — often leaving you wondering whether he was serious (usually not). He made people feel welcome and included, and he never forgot a conversation.

We will miss him enormously. Betley will not feel the same without him.

With love and gratitude for having known him. Rest easy.

Love,
Steven, Gill, George, Rose and Daisy
