Alan DavidMONGERThe Monger family are saddened to announce the death of beloved husband, father, and grandfather Alan Monger.

A funeral will take place at the Park Crematorium at 11.30am on Wednesday 11th March 2026 and we would welcome anyone who new Alan to attend.

Throughout Alan's career as a teacher at Hele's School he helped many young people and it was his wish that, instead of flowers, people could donate to ActionAid which supports young people in under developed parts of the world:

Mr Monger was our form master from 1973-1977. He advised, "If you can't decide what you want to do... you're in danger of drifting into teaching". I entered teaching by chance, in my 30s, and remembered his words, but also that when challenged by his 16 yr-old form group, "...is that what happened to you, Sir?" he only answered with a wry smile that "it's not necessarily a bad thing." The best teachers are the ones whose words we still remember, nearly 50 years later.

Alan was a good friend and colleague of mine during many years together as history teachers at Plympton Grammar School and later Hele's School. As Head Of History his knowledge of the subject was recognised by teachers and pupils alike; he was a valued member of the teaching staff and well respected by all. He also had the ability to maintain discipline with quiet good nature and a subtle sense of humour. He led the History Department with understanding and care. Many parents and ex pupils will have fond memories of the help and guidance he was always willing to give. David Dunton, friend and fellow teacher.

As a family we have much to be grateful for to Alan, as he taught our four children at Hele School over many years. He was highly respected for his knowledge, his ability to share this, and his care for his students. A knowledgeable, intelligent, but above all a very warm and humane man, with always a ready greeting and a keen sense of humour. Greatly missed by all the Stubbs family.
