MurielWARDof Braichmelyn, Bethesda passed away peacefully on Monday 14th July 2025, aged 84 years.

Widow of the former headteacher of Glasbury Primary School, the late David C. Ward, Mary is survived by Cat, her oldest child, and grandchildren Xanthe, Robin and Charlie, in the UK, daughter Helen and grandchildren Azusa and Hanna in Japan, and her youngest daughter Justine and grandchildren Keeley, Magali and Ellesha in Australia. She had been looking forward to meeting her two great-grandchildren, Oliver and Leona, for the first time.

For many years Mary was a familiar and friendly face behind the counter at Royston Photographic in Bangor and later at the Debenhams department store in town. Her passion for the written word led her to becoming a founding member of the Bangor Cellar Writing Group, which was open to anyone in the area who wished to hone their creative writing skills. Mary was a woman of words who brought people together.

Much loved, Mary is remembered with great affection by her family and friends, including her kind and supportive neighbours. Having lived a full life, she can finally rest in peace and be reunited with Deiniol, her greatly missed son.

A funeral service will take place on Thursday 28th August 2025, at 1.30pm, at Bangor Crematorium, followed by a reception at Gwesty Carreg Bran, Llanfair PG, Anglesey, LL61 5YH. Anyone who knew Mary and would like to pay their respects is welcome to attend.

Although there is no requirement for formal funeral attire, those who would prefer to wear traditional dark clothing are welcome to do so, ideally with accessories in any of Mary's favourite colours of purple, mauve and pink, or alternatively wear items with a floral design to reflect her love of the roses and other flowers in her front garden, where she would sit and read on warm and sunny days.

Donations in Mary's memory, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Book Aid, one of a dozen or more charities that she regularly supported. These can be made on the day, or via a weblink. If necessary, please contact H O Davies Funeral Directors, 4 High Street, Bangor . 01248 362650.

Farewell dear Mary - second Mum. I have many happy memories of you, including being taken aged four or five, to a book fair in Cambridge. You gave me Topsy and Tim and the Fog’ which fostered a lifelong love of children’s illustration. I still have it. Thank you. Xx

My sincere sympathy to Mary's family and friends. Mary was an asset to our writing group whenever she visited. She was a feisty lady with a great

sense of humour.

Where do I begin?
My legendary Auntie Mary. We would laugh later that the first few years of my life I was terrified of you but you really took me under your wing when I moved to Bangor for my degree.

I’d have my weekly catch ups with you in the shop, meet for cuppas and cake and seek well needed sanctuary with you and Uncle Gravy.

You were my cheerleader, confidante and comfort. We would share book recommendations, thoughts of the state of the world and on occasion, agree to disagree. I will miss our very long phone chats, that would often require a brief intermission for fresh drinks and loo breaks. In true Jane Austen style, you were delighted when I met Nick, and took it as a good sign that he shared a birthday with Uncle David. I’ll never forget our trip to Suffolk when you “borrowed” Nick, purely so you could link arms “for balance”. You were so encouraging of Nick’s writing and we will miss the random books, gifts and cards that would arrive, with a handwritten note reminding us that we had been on her mind, or felt that this was “just the thing”.

In return, I take great pride in introducing you to David Austin roses…and reminding you when to feed them and deadhead them.

I don’t want to sign off, but as you always said to me “love ya”.
Lots of love from Jen and Nick xxx
