Billy and I met over fifty years ago introduced by Steve Hasset. It was to become a lifelong friendship. My dad and I became customers of Bill who had a bacon and cooked meat business. Out of the shop we began mixing at our favourite haunts. The Rose the Legion and the Wheatsheaf
being our favourites. Bill made friends readily and was popular everywhere we went. Ann was always with him, they were inseperable. They had an open house with friends there any day of the week pouring us coffee and brandy till the wee small hours.
Bill had a few setbacks with his health but always remained cheerful and positive. He laughed and joked with me and our Steve just a few days before he passed. Endlessly polite and helpful Billy was everyone"s friend. I hope I was one of his special friends. He was certainly one of mine.

I’ve known Billy for over 60 years. Our late teens and early 20s were a dizzy mixture of alcohol, music and football aided by Brian Wardley who had introduced me to Billy.
Billy kept me enthralled with his sharp wit, sense of humour, love of life and generosity.
When I phoned Billy I would say “Alex Young here”. His reply would always be that StJohn was a better centre forward than Young. Great banter between a Red and a Blue.
A few years ago Marianne and I spent a week in Portugal with Billy, Ann and Paul Eggo. It was full of laughter and stories from our past. See photo below.
It was a privilege and a huge pleasure to have Billy as a friend. I love him dearly and will sadly miss him. He was without doubt a one-off.

Dear Billy, where to start, I first met you and Ann, Andrew & Anna in Chester, in Spring of 1983, and got to know you all so well thereafter after practically living at yours every weekend. You welcomed me into your family, always so generous, hilariously funny and just all-round great guy to be around. I just loved Brodie Ave, where you hosted the best parties (your 40th was standout) , dinner parties and get-togethers. Sundays were the best, after a few hours up The Legion and the The Rose, back for Ann's amazing roast then back up the legion for a livener, followed by a Chinese from Kennys. Billy was one in a million and will be missed by so many, but I'm grateful to have been part of your world. RIP 🙏 Billy love from Maria, Tony, Katy & Steph and Jack xxx
