ScottANDERSONWednesday, April 26 saw the passing of Anderson Scott, known as Andy, at the age of 94. Originally from Cumbria, Andy came to Lancashire in the early 1970s when appointed Senior Deputy Head of Hollins School in Accrington where he worked until early retirement over a decade later. Any visit to the town in later years would feature “He was at Hollins” or occasionally “I taught that one’s Mum” as people acknowledged him in the supermarket. His first love was the study of literature and poetry, and he had previously combined teaching English with the role of Chief Examiner of CSE English where he brought a fresh take to the curriculum by adding newer modern texts in a successful attempt to grab the attention of those passing through schools during that time. His wordsmith skills had a daily workout with the newspaper crossword, and any visitors might find themselves coming second in a game of Scrabble which had overtaken his previous favourite Contract Bridge, that he played to county standard. In retirement he rekindled his love of languages, studying Italian, German and Spanish at the local college. His love affair with France had begun much sooner when as a teenager, school had connected him to a French pen-pal of a similar age who became a lifelong friend following their initial swap to each other’s family homes. Frequent visitors to Europe, initially as keen campers, retirement allowed Andy and his wife Eileen to spend more time in the cottage they had bought in rural France, where wine would overtake tea as the day progressed. As a competitive player at school and university his other main passion was rugby, and he took up refereeing in his late 20s. He continued to referee until his knees could take no more and then became a referee’s assessor, standing on the touchline whatever the weather to pass on constructive guidance to the ref at the end of the game. The Manchester Society awarded Andy lifelong fellowship in recognition of his 30 plus years of service to the game in the region. Father, Grandfather and recently Great Grandfather, Andy spent much of the last few years entertaining family and guests at home in Baxenden. Happily married for almost 70 years, his life was topped with being a loving husband and parent, drinking wine, eating mint imperials, walking the dogs, and chatting with anyone who would stand still for a minute. Following a short period of ill health, he passed away peacefully in his sleep under the care of Springhill Nursing Home.
