Mal,
I met you back in 1980 when you came to audition for The Smart. That didn’t work out but I was able to connect you with Gene October who was looking for a new backing band for Chelsea. You got the gig and pounded out the beat along side Nik Austin and Paul “Linc” Lincoln. From Chelsea you got a gig with the UK Subs and after returning from a major US tour with them came back to the UK and married Katie. Soon after you were involved in the accident that would have slowed down many but you just got on with life. We lived just streets apart in Notting Hill and you took me to my first Chelsea match in your Trans Am, they have been my team ever since! After you and Katie moved to Grants Pass, Oregon I and Mo my wife moved to Novato, California and so began our trips up and down Interstate 5 to visit each other. You played table tennis and were the Grants Pass champion I believe 21 times! You also excelled in Tennis and Basketball which I watched you play on many occasions.
Mal, we had some great times together and many conversations that could go on for hours which I will always remember. Intelligent and witty, always quick off the mark, generous and kind and a great music lover that was you. You will be greatly missed by myself and Mo. Rest in peace Mal.

We were mates in those long gone days of Mott ruling the waves. We looked for every release or sighting of that once great band. We were avid devotees, which linked us together. Meeting you a few years ago was like rolling back the years. Your smile was infectious, your enthusiasm for music boundless. Your courage to continue to battle against your disabilities inspiring. You will be missed Malcolm. God bless you, Pete
