NigelBIRCHMr Nigel Birch of Newchurch, Rossendale died at home on Wednesday, May 21, after a short illness, aged 69. Husband to Heather, dad to Calum and father-in-law to Emma. He was a much loved granddad to Bella, Imogen and Tobi. He leaves his sister, Diane, and her husband, Calum. Nigel worked at JH Hirst footwear factory until its closure in 1997. He then worked at Tor View School until his retirement in 2022. He was an active member of Edgeside Baptist Church and Rawtenstall Cricket Club. Nigel will be dearly missed by his family and friends. His funeral will be held at Lumb Baptist Church (BB4 9PL) on Tuesday, June 3, at 10.30am followed by Burnley Crematorium at 12.15pm. All are welcome to join us at Rawtenstall Cricket Club afterwards to celebrate Nigel’s life. He wanted those attending his funeral to know they are welcome to dress casually. If you feel comfortable you may attend in shorts, it’s what he would have done (or what he would have liked). He wore shorts 365 days a year! No need to wear black. No flowers. Instead, should anyone wish to make a donation in Nigel’s memory, such donations will be split between Edgeside Baptist Church and the Royal British Legion. Donations can be made online at: www.fredhamer.co.uk (tributes and donations) Funeral director: Dawn Winfield Dip L.M. B.I.F.D. Fred Hamer Funeral Service, James Street, Rawtenstall, BB4 7NE. I have been saddened by the news of Nigel’s all too soon passing. I worked with Nigel since we employed him in 1997 at Tor View School. Principally, he helped with IT and all things technical but he also worked in classrooms, drove minibuses and supported the schools wide range of of cultural, sporting and fundraising events. He was an unfailingly enthusiastic and happy man who contributed much to the life of the school and was so supportive of the pupils and students. I am unable to attend his service but if able I would be sure to wear shorts as a tribute to this kind, generous and good man.
RIP Nigel you shall be much missed.

former Headteacher, Tor View School
