I've known John or Johnnie B as we use to call him for most of my 35 year career at Royal Mail, more so when I went onto the driving section. For the last 6 years or so we worked together in the mornings so shared a van. Forthright in his views, he wasn't one to take prisoners in a argument & boy did he love to argue! The only thing louder than John was his dubious choice in socks, lime green, yellow to name but 2 of the colours in his eclectic collection. Certainly they were a talking point among his colleagues & customers. A stickler for the rules I recall John walking back to the van once after completing his delivery with a Royal Mail sack in his hand. He was shaking it & leaves were falling out of it, he'd only confiscated it from a hapless bloke who had had the cheek to be collecting leaves in his garden with it. Its Royal Mail property he told me, he was grinning from ear to ear! He was the 'go to man' for all culinary queries. I learned a lot from him. He was a grafter, totally loyal to Royal Mail & frankly irreplaceable. Taken far too early from us, he will be greatly missed by all, may he rest in peace.
