Mary SmithBRAYFORD(Nee Walker) On Tuesday 25th August, Mary sadly passed away peacefully at home just short of her 100th Birthday. Like many young people in 1940, Mary signed up to help in the war effort and so was uprooted from a small Scottish hamlet in Fife and her close knit family and friends, to the Swynnerton Ammunitions factory near Newcastle under Lyme. Here she was a key worker making bombs and bullets for the Allied forces, one of the "Sywnnerton Roses". During this time, she also, like many displaced people, went to the Pomona pub in Newcastle where she would often meet with new friends and where she would sit patiently whilst her local sweetheart George would play and sing at the old familiar piano. After the war George and Mary moved to a new house in Bradwell and raised a family of 2 sons and 4 daughters. George worked at Silverdale Colliery and Mary was a home maker. She was a familiar figure at Bradwell shops and always had the time of day for friends, neighbours and passers-by. The family grew over the years to 21 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren, recently adding a great, great grandchild to the family, not surprising she become known to all as the Queen Bee. A remarkable, strong, caring and generous lady who loved her family dearly and will be remembered by all, especially those at the Latter day Saints Church, as a kind and friendly soul. She will be sadly missed by all as she has now been re-united with her beloved George after 30 years apart. Hopkinson Wootton Lovatt Hopkinson House, 15 Chetwynd Street, Wolstanton, ST5 0EQ.
