Ernie guided me through English Lit 'O' Level at HGSO, 1972-73, good memories of a brilliant teacher. He brought to life Wuthering Heights, Richard III, the First World War poets and a good deal more - I can still remember numerous quotations from these works to this day. Very thorough and methodical in his approach, and delivered in a pleasant and accessible manner with plenty of well judged humour when required.

Half a century on, thanks again, Ernie!

Ernie and I completed our careers at Oldham College around 1996. We were both Heads of different Schools offering different Academic disciplines; and we remained in close social contact for many years after, until his final move to Scotland. We shared a common love of Aesthetics. Ernie with his profound insight into Literature was also extremely well versed in the visual fine Arts having taken a Double First in English and Philosophy at university, and subsequently his MA.
He was astute and forensic in debate, with an intelligence that took him into the higher realm of intellect which he embraced with modesty and humility. An instinctive 'carer' of others, not only in his professional live, but in long serving personal matters, he will always be remembered as a very exceptional person. I was very proud to have his friendship.....

So sad to hear of Ernie's passing. He was a great colleague and friend when I started at Oldham College in 1978 in my first full time teaching job. I remember some great nights out and trips to watch various plays with students. He then became my Head of Department and was a great inspiration to us all.

I knew Ernie as a fellow Head of School at Oldham College upto the mid 1990s and counted him as a good friend and trusted colleague. We had similar attitudes and views especially on the futility of the three hour Management Meetings held every Monday afternoon! Ernie was a genuinely nice guy and I admired his intelligence, humour and modesty. Rest in peace, Ernie.

Ernie Convey, one of the wonderful teachers. Who inspired confidence in his students and helped them unlock the wonders of literature. Rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon him, rest in peace.
