Ron was an incredible man, a life long resident of Wollaton, aside from his time serving with the British Forces in WWII. Ron was a D- Day veteran, called up in 1941 on his 19th birthday to serve in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. At the start of the Second Front, Ron was landed in France with the First Canadian Army Group Royal Artillery driving a Bren Gun Carrier up the Normandy beaches, a few days after D-Day itself. Ron saw fighting in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and he was with one of the first regiments to cross the Rhine into Hitler's Germany in March 1944. In 2018, in recognition of his part in the liberation of France, he was made a member of the Legion d'Honneur with the award presented to him by the French Consul at a ceremony in Wollaton Hall. At the age of fourteen Ron joined the local Labour League of Youth, where he was to go on to meet his future wife, Florence Grundy. Ron and Florrie were married in 1941 at St Michael and All Angels. They lived in Wollaton all their married life until very sadly Florrie passed away in 2002. In later years, Ron found friendship with Millie, with whom he had been at school in Wollaton all those years ago. This was an enduring friendship which lasted a lifetime until sadly Millie also passed away. Ron was much loved and cherished by his nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces, and great-great nephews and nieces! He also took care to maintain contact with Florrie's family the Grundys, Millie's family and distant cousins in Scotland. Regular visits to see him were a delight to all, with Ron often sending visitors off with sweets, bars of chocolate, newspapers and magazines, you rarely left empty-handed! Ron will be will be sadly missed by all who knew him. If desired donations may be made in memory of Ron, to be divided between The Soldiers Charity and The Wollaton Hall Walled Garden Restoration Fund.
