BettyENGLANDwill be most remembered as a selfless, generous and fun person. Betty (b.1934) moved to Rossendale in 1969 with husband, John (d. 1983), and son, David, when John took up the post of Headmaster at Blackthorn school. Their second son, Richard, was born in 1971. Betty’s vocation was also teaching. She educated two generations of Rossendale school children holding several posts, with the most long-standing, that of deputy head of Waterfoot Infant School, retiring in 1990. Betty had many talents and pastimes: arts and crafts; tailoring; gardening; butchery; cooking; wine tasting; cryptic crosswords; and Radio 4. She was a very sociable person and her favourite thing was to be hostess to gatherings of family, friends and neighbours at Oaklands Drive. She remained young at heart and injected fun and laughter into all social situations. Betty doted on her grandchildren, Maddy and Sam. She was generous with her time and resources. A volunteer for Rossendale Hospice, visits and care for the elderly, thoughtful gifts for everyone. Betty’s life was about what she could do for others. The family are extremely grateful to the staff at Royal Blackburn Hospital for the outstanding care given to Betty at the end of her life. Betty’s funeral will take place at 3.15pm on March 9 at Burnley Crematorium and afterwards at Rawtenstall Cricket Club. The family would be delighted for all who knew her to attend to celebrate her life. Family flowers only, donations to www. tinytoones.org a charity education provider where Richard is Treasurer.
