My sympathy to Richards [Dick] family, friends and colleagues on and off the football pitch. Only knew Dick via football but he was a Referee who earned respect. Always fair, clear in explanation and humour thrown in when needed. Now whistle at rest God Bless Dick.

On behalf of Scunthorpe Referees Association.

Our most sincere condolences to all Richard’s family. It is with sadness we acknowledge the passing of one of our esteemed former members.

Dick (as we knew him) was a very much respected local referee, having a manner and strength of character that many younger referees at the time, like myself, craved to have, as we struggled to establish ourselves in that role. Dick had a reputation for being fair but didn’t suffer fools on the football field.

I only really knew Dick through his football, but there was much more to a man that served the local community in so many ways over the years, hence his deserved recognition by Her Majesty with his MBE, an honour shared with the family he cherished. He was one of the very best and will be missed by many.

I remember you as a well respected officer at Scunthorpe Police Station. Always quick to help and not dismissive of what people had to say. You were an officer and a gentleman. Rest in Peace.
