Robin SladenHAMERBorn 16th December 1940. Died 11th July 2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robin Hamer, eldest Son of Kenneth and Mary Hamer and Brother of Nicholas Hamer, at Fairfield Hospital, Bury on Saturday 11th July 2020, after a brief period of sickness. Robin was hemiplegic from birth, suffering from paralysis of one side of his body. Although afflicted with this handicap he never let it seriously hamper his enjoyment of life. He attended Primary and Secondary School in Norden and started work at Heap's Mill as an office boy. He then moved to his job with the maintenance department of Rochdale's Education Department, touring all the schools where he painted blackboards and repaired equipment. Although only having the use of one hand he was an excellent carpenter. Robin was extremely well known around Rochdale, involved as he was over the years with many organisations, groups and teams. He took a great interest in all sporting events and although not able to participate directly in many sports he was the 'kit boy' for Rochdale Hornets for many years and then went on to be 'kit boy' for Norden Cricket Club, avidly following and supporting the aspirations of both teams. Late in life he joined the Ramblers Association and not only went on many walks with them, but also lead some walks he had planned. He also took up bowling, both green bowling and indoor and was a member of bowling teams in Norden, entering competitive matches against other teams from the North. This was a source of great pride and joy to him. It was his participation in this variety of work and leisure activities which meant wherever he went he always bumped into someone who knew him. Rob was very independent, but so appreciative of the consistent support and kindnesses of his closest friends, Martin and Maureen Coupe, whose thoughtfulness on a daily basis relieved much of the worries and stress of his later years. He enjoyed travelling, outings and visiting places of interest, particularly going to see his brother in Italy and later, in Mauritius. Robin is survived by his brother Nicholas and many cousins, of whom Jean and Pamela Hamer and Richard and Sarah James, live in Rochdale. Funeral Service to be held at Rochdale Crematorium on Tuesday 28th July at 10.30am, family flowers only please, donations if desired to Rochdale Children's Moorland Home c/o Dixons Funeral Service, 2 Manchester Road, Rochdale, OL11 4HY.
