Anthony LeonardHARRISAnthony (Tony), died peacefully in Penarth on August 5th, 2025, aged 90 after a long illness.
He was Professor Emeritus of Geology of the University of Liverpool and visiting research fellow at Aberystwyth University and Cardiff University. He was sometime President of the Geological Society of London and a member of various Governmental research bodies.
He was born in Cardiff on 11th May 1935 to Haydn (Headmaster) and Dora (nee Wilkinson). Tony was a pupil at Cardiff High School 1945-1955. He played hockey, cricket and chess for the school. His first degree and then doctorate in Geology 1959 were from the University of Wales Aberystwyth. He represented the University college, the University of Wales and the United Universities of the UK as a hockey goalkeeper.
He joined the British Geological Survey in 1959 and for 12 years mapped geology of the Scottish Highlands. In 1971 he transferred to the University of Liverpool where he had a long and successful academic career culminating at retirement as Dean of the Faculty of Science.
He and his wife returned home to South Wales where he continued his research at Cardiff University.
He leaves a grieving family, wife Noreen, daughter Elisabeth, son David and grandchildren Ifor, Bryn, Rebecca and Daisy.
He was a very sociable man, greatly loved and remembered by his many research students and friends.
His funeral will be held at 2pm on August 27th at the Cardiff and Glamorgan Crematorium in Wenvoe. CF62 9PX
