Leon and I first met in the early 1980s at the Universty of
Nottingham, I was leading the Computer Science Group (buried inside a
Maths Dept!) and he was in Electrical Engineering . It was the era of the
8-bit micro and Leon was a key person in our transition from "Computer
Scince Group" into becoming the "School of Computer Science". Truly we
couldn't have achieved this without him.

All along, given the shaky state of Leon's health, I was all too aware
that Valerie was a key part in Leon being able to achieve what he did.
She really did have ... a heart of gold" - it shone through in everything
she did. As the early 80s turned into the late 80s we appointed Leon as
Deputy Head of School with responsibility for the teaching effort and
the day-to-day running of the School of CS.

And 1990 when it arrived was another momentous year because we appointed
Lois Beiley (Lois Catchpole as she then was) to be Secretary to the School of
CS. I have just spoken to Lois on the phone and she confirms that she
*did* go to the Funeral today! I am truly delighted that she was able to get
there in person. Because Leon & Valerie were a vital part of everything we
did in those early days.

Valerie truly did have " ... a heart of gold" - what a marvellous person
she was !

So please let me offer my deepest condolences on the loss of Valerie .
I'm just so delighted that in the end - despite a bodged email
address - the School of CS ( U of Nott.) was represented by Lois
being there in person and me watching all of the service on the
WebCast. So, things didn't work out too badly after all

With very best wishes
