Billy passed away peacefully at home in East Dulwich on Sunday, 26th May 2024, age 87, surrounded by his family.
Born in Cahir, County Tipperary, Ireland, the youngest of three sons of John and Norah. Billy enjoyed regularly visiting Joan, his childhood neighbour.
He moved to London during the 1950’s where he worked as a builder on numerous projects including the Thames Barrier and the Nat West Tower as well as Fairlawn Primary school, later attended by two of his six grandchildren.
He met his future wife, Geraldine, at her aunt’s house and went on to have three sons, John, Paul, and Bill. He remained in Brockley, Peckham, and East Dulwich for the rest of his life.
He and Geraldine had been regular attenders of the St Thomas Moore church social club on Lordship Lane, East Dulwich where they kept in touch with many of their old friends from the London Irish community. The family spent most annual holidays in Galway with Geraldine s family extended family as well as trips to see Billy's cousin Margaret in Tipperary.
Billy's focus was his family, and he worked hard to support them. He bore his later illness with quiet dignity. He will be very sorely missed by his family and friends.

RIP Billy. The Gallaghers have many fond memories of you from our families' shared experiences in Peckham and Dulwich, and especially all of the good times at the "Irish" club. We'll never forget your smile. You were an important part of the close community that ensured we all grew up safe, secure and supported.

On a personal level, thank you also for standing as my confirmation sponsor.

I am proud to have known you and to count your sons as friends.

Dear Uncle Billy, you were such a lovely man. I will never forget how you and Auntie Ger took care of me that summer in London many many years ago. There was a transport strike one day a week that summer and my employer in central London had arranged somewhat unusual accommodation for me. I’ll never forget how when I rang the house you told me to hop in a black cab and come home and you would pay. Over the years I often thought how much that cab cost you and how hard you would have worked to make that money but you didn’t hesitate for a moment. I was family and you were going to take care of me whatever it cost X
