DorisHOWORTHDoris passed away peacefully on Saturday 14th August at The Laurels Nursing Home, Bacup aged 93 years. Born in Manchester, she was sister to elder brother, the late Norman and younger sister, the late Jean. In 1932 her family moved to Bacup where she later attended Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School. On leaving school she worked at Bacup Police Station where she met her late husband James Bentley Howorth (Ben). They moved to Shawforth in 1958 where they bought a Greengrocers and Florist shop. After closing the shop in the 1970's, she worked as a library assistant at Whitworth and Shawforth Libraries. Doris and Ben later moved to Sandbank Gardens, Whitworth where they spent the remainder of their lives together. Doris was an avid reader, possessing a great general knowledge and an extraordinarily good memory. She had many interests and hobbies including antique hunting, hill-walking and holidays to the Lake District and abroad. Doris will be dearly missed by all family and friends. She leaves behind her children Elizabeth and John, grandchildren Sam, James, Matthew and Scarlett, great-grandchildren Anna, Sarah, Gus and Arthur, son-in-law Terence, sister-in-law Marian and brother-in-law Peter. A special thank you to all the staff at The Laurels who provided Doris with such wonderful care over the past 4 years. The funeral will be held on Thursday 26th August at 11.50am at Rochdale Crematorium. Family flowers only, donations if desired to The Laurels Nursing Home, Bankside Lane, Bacup.
