JamesHUMPHREYSJames Nimmo Humphreys was born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 25th 1942 and died in Farnborough, England on January 29th, 2026, aged 83. The eldest of six children, he was preceded in death by his parents Andrew & Jean, younger brothers David & Sam, and wife Margo. He is survived by children Adrienne & Mark; step-children James, Julie, Michael, & Tina; twelve grandchildren (Alfie, Beth, Bonnie, Charlie, Eliza, Ella, Emily, Harry, Ian, James, Kyle, Olivia, Scott, Tilly, Tom, & Victoria); three great-grandchildren (Alfie, Beau, & Otis); sisters Andrea, Jean, & Margaret, as well as nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. When told that he was dying, he stated that there was nothing he wanted to do in life that he had not already done, that we were not to worry, and he reassured us that he would be okay. He was surrounded by loved ones in his final days, he was not alone at the very end, and he passed peacefully.
Jim led a wide & varied life, and showed an early entrepreneurial spirit which continued to drive him throughout his days. He lived and worked internationally, ending the career that took him overseas as the sales director for South-East Asia. His reinvention was as a university lecturer after attaining his Master's degree, and he continued teaching until his retirement. He was an active and committed Freemason for over 50 years, rising to take charge of the Etonian Chapter as First Principal. His hobbies were eclectic and generally active, from fixing classic cars and riding motorcycles to windsurfing and fishing, gardening and lawn bowls. Jim could definitely not sit still for long. And he was always happy to share a story over a drink - any room full of strangers that he encountered would not be strangers for long. Above all, he loved kids and was never happier than if he was entertaining youngsters, or encouraging them to gentle mischief. As "Papa" or "Uncle Jim" he truly came alive, and he will be dearly missed.
There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday February 14th from 1pm to 3pm at the Core Ivy Leaf Club on Victoria Road in Farnborough, GU14 0HF. His family asks that in lieu of flowers he is instead honored and remembered with a charitable donation, either of time or money. Three charities that were meaningful to him are listed below, but Jim would not be the least upset if you made your own choice - he certainly would!
