I have only just read this notice, as my old email account, along with William's address, was closed down some time ago.
Six years ago, William completed a short biography of my grandfather on my mother's side, the artist Lawrence Deller. This was because he had attended the Grammar School at Lichfield, where William was later to teach.
I still have the copy he kindly sent me, and only wish that my mother had been alive to see it.
It was a delight when he and his wife were able to visit me at the family bookshop in Alresford. A lovely and intelligent man, I am glad to have met him.

Bill was a fantastic Economics teacher from my perspective (A Level 1987-1989) at King Edwards. A third subject choice became my university option in terms of degree. I last met Bill at a teacher conference in
Birmingham in 1994. It was interesting that his Thatcherite economic views had moderated a touch whilst I had been at uni. I was glad that he had seen the light! I went on to become an Economics teacher at Bedford School and am currently Head of Economics and Business at King Henry VIII in Coventry. Quite
simply, Bill’s enthusiasm, innovative teaching (he had a PC when they were very expensive!) were the reasons for this happening. I remember going to a conference with Bill at Birmingham University in my Lower Sixth. Myself and another student just jumped into his Ford Diesel and off we went. No pointless consent forms or risk assessments, just a teacher encouraging his pupils to go a little beyond the syllabus! Bill - you were a wonderful teacher. Rest in peace.
