Whilst visiting the church next to Whitby Abbey I saw Joshua’s happy face beaming out from a photograph that had been lovingly placed in a memorial corner of the church.
I never knew Joshua but I was drawn to his picture and thought he looked such a nice lad and I felt very saddened to know that he had been taken so soon. I also thought of the deep pain his family and friends must be suffering.
I was moved to find his obituary and I read the lovely words said about him; I learned that he was a bright and promising young man with talents and zest for life.
I hope I am not intruding, I know it must seem strange that a stranger has come here but I wish to covey my heartfelt condolences to the family and to all those others who knew and loved Joshua.
I am so sorry for your loss and hope that you may take comfort in God’s promise of eternal life. Joshua is in a beautiful place; one day you will be reunited.

Josh was truly exceptional. At just 14 years old, he had already done so much. He mastered chess with patience, earned his black belt with determination, played the cello with feeling, and climbed with courage. Whatever he tried, Josh gave it his whole heart.

But more than what he achieved, it was who he was that we’ll always remember. He was kind, humble, and so very bright, and a warmth that drew people in.

Josh was also a true romantic, very thoughtful, gentle, and caring beyond his years. He brought flowers and sweets, and he always walked Ellie home to make sure she was safe. His beautiful eyes and unforgettable smile could light up any room. He had a sincerity about him, giving so much of himself in simple, genuine ways that none of us will ever forget.

I’ll always remember the everyday moments with him, helping to set the table, brushing the cat, or sitting on the sofa with snacks, watching movies together. I think of playing Jenga, him catching me cheating and calling me out with that cheeky smile, his laughter filling the room. I think too of him helping in the garden, just happy to be part of things. Those little moments showed both his playful and his caring side, and with Josh they became memories to treasure forever.

Josh touched so many lives with his spirit, his kindness, and his joy. He will stay with us always, deeply loved beyond measure, and forever someone we are proud to have loved.

I’ll remember the memories, the laughter, the love.
Rest peacefully,
Josh.

God bless.
