Michael StephenKANEThe family of Michael Stephen Kane announced his passing on the morning of September 11th, 2025 at The Hospice in the Weald, Pembury, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, United Kingdom.
Michael was born on March 1st, 1968, in Lower Hutt City, Wellington, New Zealand and was the dearly loved husband of Donald J. Holder of Royal Tunbridge Wells. He was the treasured, fifth son of the late Mary Patricia Guthrie and Denis Kane of Petone and grandson of the late Mary Ann O'Donnell and John Guthrie, Clara Andrews, and Joseph Kane, MBE. He is survived by his spouse Donald and was the brother and brother-in-law of Sr. Josephine, RNDM (Rome), Josef Paul & Bryce (London-Los Angeles) John & Annie, Peter & Julie, Simon & Johanna, Susan & Paul and Annie & Matt (New Zealand), cherished uncle of Rebecca, Chris, Emma, Chris, Elle, Tony, Claire, Steven, Angie, James, Hamish, Alice, Andrew, Melanie, Ethan, Milla, Noah, great uncle of Caleb, Chloe, Hette, Patrick, Willow, Mila Rose, Murphy, Kaia, Luca (Australia & New Zealand) and a cousin of the Lattimer, O'Donnell, Grace, Kelly, McGreevy, Levey, Borough, Healy and Peters families. Michael garnered sporting accolades becoming the 1982 New Zealand National Junior Gymnastic Champion and was educated at St. Bernard's College, Lower Hutt and graduated with multiple degrees in Arts after his studies at Düsseldorf's esteemed Heinrich Heine Universität, Berlin's Technische Universität and East Germany's Humboldt Universität.
Michael became a gifted diplomat, representing the Government of the United Kingdom. He utilized his linguistic prowess and fluency in several languages to foster international understanding with his work in Germany, Bahrain, Poland, Greece, South Africa, Albania, Panama and Peru his last posting. Beyond the confines of diplomacy, he actively participated in many charitable causes and was appointed LGBTI Staff Network Representative based at the British Embassy in Tirana, where he was able to highlight some of the great cooperation between diplomatic missions, government and local LGBT NGOs promoting human rights of LGBTI citizens in Albania. The British Embassy established STREHA, Albania's first LGBT Homeless Shelter of which Michael was Patron. His philanthropic spirit and dedication to uplift individuals and communities, leaves a lasting mark on countless lives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the numerous doctors and nursing staff at the Hospice in the Weald, Tunbridge Wells Pembury Hospital, Maidstone Hospital, and Chelsea Westminster Hospital. Their outstanding, compassionate care provided Michael with comfort during his cancer challenge. Their dedication ensured that he transitioned from this world with dignity. Michael's life was a tapestry woven with love, courage and an indomitable spirit. As we remember him, let us carry forward his legacy of generosity and compassion, ensuring that his light continues to illuminate the path for others.

Requiem Mass takes place on Tuesday 23rd September at 2.00pm in the Church of St. Anselm's Roman Catholic Church, Lower Green Road, Pembury, Kent TN2 4DZ, followed by a private cremation.
