Mr. Kelly guided me through my first 3 years of French. That language was my best achievement at GCE O-level and the gratitude I feel to Dan for that powerful introduction persists to the present day. I feel his influence every time I reach for my fat Harrap's French Dictionary. We all called him "Dan" and I am mildly surprised today to discover that it was his real given name. While he was my form teacher in 3A in 1963, I became aware of his sincerity in spiritual matters during our half-hour of daily "Religion" lessons. However, I haven't forgotten the hundred lines sentence that he meted out when he discovered my scheme for bunking-off compulsory Games: "C'est loin de la coupe aux lèvres." i.e. "There's many a slip twixt cup and lip." That was a lesson for life. Thank you, Dan. Requiescat In Pace.

I was a kiddie from Lockleaze (council estate).
First French lesson. In walks this sophisticated looking gentlemen: "Bonjour mes enfants."
What!?
Anyway, Dan Kelly eased the likes of me into the curious world of another language - blimey I had only just mastered English.
Dan always put me at ease. He called me sunshine and sometimes blue eyes and it didn't feel weird.
Mr. Kelly paid me the ultimate compliment after the first term. He said I had developed a decent French accent and was not afraid to express myself in French. Thrilled? You bet.
My first holiday in France as an adult was all the more pleasurable because of Dan Kelly.

Que son âme repose en paix, Monsieur Kelly.

So sorry to hear of Dan'S passing. As has been said previously, a fine teacher with a good sense of humour, I will always be grateful to Dan for the few words of French that at the age of 75 that I can still remember, rest in peace, John Coleman.

Dan Kelly was one of life’s gentlemen. As a young pupil of his, I noticed a graciousness and wit not common in the teaching profession. He exhibited patience and humour to imbue many students like myself, and others through the years, with a very positive attitude to the French language and culture. Structured with methodical organization, his classes were never dull.
His appearance, reflecting his noticeable presence, was always groomed and refined. He was often in the company of similarly minded teachers, such as Messrs. McCarthy and David. When old school friends and I talk of him, it is always with humour, affection and respect. A tremendous role model.
