ColinLAINGColin Laing, 87, of Scottsdale, Arizona, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025. He is survived by his sons Ian A. Laing (Christy) of Omaha, Nebraska, and Stuart Laing (Ellen) of Eugene, Oregon; and by his beloved grandchildren Kathryn, Emily Kuhlmann (Joseph), and Allie Rapp (Alex). He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of over 50 years, Margaret.
Born in Redcar, North Yorkshire, England, Colin and Margaret emigrated to the United States in 1974, beginning their American journey in Tucson before settling in the Phoenix area. Colin brought with him a rare and masterful craft-bicycle frame building-which he honed under the legendary Jack Taylor and his brothers Ken and Norman, pioneers of the British cycling world.
Colin's artistry in steel was revered by cyclists across the globe. His frames, known for their seamless welds and elegant artistic lugs, bore names such as Colin Laing, Laing Racing Cycles, Colin, Colian, and Le Colin. He built for cyclists worldwide, including pro athletes, elite teams and renowned shops. Over his lifetime, Colin crafted more than 12,500 frames and repaired thousands more-each one a testament to his precision, passion, and dedication to the cycling community.
Before his career in bicycles, Colin worked in car body repair and served honorably in the Royal Tank Regiment of Her Majesty's Army.
Though there will be no formal service, those who knew Colin are invited to honor his memory in the way he would have loved most-by going out for a ride.
