Mr Lawson was a true legend. One of the nicest people you could meet. My memories are of a guy who saw the best in everyone. You didn’t have to be the most athletic person in the class for him to have time for you. And I certainly wasn’t when he taught my P.E. between 1994-1996 when I went on to do A Levels.

I hope he would be more proud of my recent sporting efforts. The memories of him encouraging me to be more active stuck with me during a journey which led to me losing 80+ kgs in my mid 20s and leading a much better life.

“You’ve got an engine ‘Jazeem’! You’ve got the guts to do better! Come on lad!”

He will always be the fella who knew me as ‘Jazeem.’

And I hope that I’m a better ‘Big Jazz’ today and that he would be proud of my efforts.

I had to down weights when I heard the news.

My thoughts remain with his family and great friends.

And although I’m an atheist myself; I hope that his god goes with him and watches over him.

Thanks for all your kindness, sir!

Howay the Lads! 🖤🤍

I have only just read the sad news about Peter Lawson. He was my PE teacher from 1976 to 1981, and I have remembered him with great fondness ever since. He made a huge impact on me, and on many others who were fortunate to have him as a teacher. My best wishes to his family. X

Peter was a lovely man and excellent teacher. I was once in London with my Dad, Barrie Jackson who also taught at Ponteland, and this middle aged man vaulted a wall, came running over and said’Eh, Paul lad, how are you?’
