Alexander WilliamMAILER(Sandy). Sandy Mailer passed away peacefully at Mapleford Nursing Home on May 6, aged 90 years. Originally from Falkirk in Scotland where he met his wife Mary at the St Andrews Church Youth Fellowship, Sandy came to England with Mary and children - Fiona, David, Kathleen and Morag in 1969, first living in Cheadle Hulme and then moving to Accrington. Sandy enjoyed a varied career working first as a printer in Scotland and Stockport, then running a family grocery business in Marple Bridge and finally being ordained as a minister in the United Reformed Church where he became minister at Whalley Road, Accrington and Haslingden United Reformed Churches in 1988. Sandy and Mary made Accrington their home and remained after retirement in 1997. Sandy remained very active within the church following retirement, continuing to lead Sunday services, weddings and funerals throughout the North-west well into his late eighties. As well as his beloved wife Mary and proud children - Fiona, David, Kathleen and Morag, Sandy was a loving grandad to 11 grandchildren - Keren, Kirsty, Shona, Ben, Andrew, Abbie, Mairi, Dan, Craig, Euan and Rachael, and great-grandad to four great-grandchildren - George, Henry, Arthur and Oliver. Also uncle to Ann, Craig and Euan, brother-in-law to Auntie Georgie and father-in-law to Ian, Jacquie, Mark and Geoff. Even before joining the church, Sandy felt a calling to help and guide others, particularly children. He was a founding officer of a Boys Brigade Company in Currie, Scotland and both taught and led Sunday school classes in Falkirk, Paisley and Cheadle Hulme. Although he spent well over half of his life in England, Sandy remained true to his Scottish roots and heritage. He was a member of the Clitheroe and District Caledonian Society for over 25 years where he participated in the weekly Scottish dancing group as well as the annual Burns Night and St Andrew’s Night events. This led to his involvement with the Lancashire and Cheshire Federation of Scottish Societies where he served as President, Chaplain and Chieftain over many years. Beyond family and Scotland, Sandy’s passions were railways, the outdoors and woodworking. As the son of a station master, he was brought up around the railway and loved everything about it, especially steam engines. He and Mary spent many happy holidays walking in Scotland and loved the day-trip opportunities to the Lakes, Trough of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales that living in Accrington afforded. If a steam train trip could be included then all the better. Sandy never bought anything if it could be made from wood. The children and grandchildren enjoyed his lovingly crafted wooden toys whilst the fruits of his labour were visible and in daily use throughout his home and that of the family. In more recent years Sandy turned his hand to modelling creating an amazing replica of the Forth Rail Bridge amongst many others. In addition to his family Sandy also had very many friends through his involvement in the local church and Scottish communities. We will all miss him dearly and treasure our memories of happy times with him. A service will be held for Sandy on Friday, May 26, starting at 2.30pm at Accrington Crematorium. Family Flowers only.
