James William Martin (or “Jim”) was born in Catford, South London on 1st March 1926.
Most of his early years were spent in the Penge and Crystal Palace area.
His family moved to Caterham from Penge after be “bombed out” during the various air raids.
He was a member of 450 squadron Air Training Corps (Caterham and Warlingham) and played in the ATC Corps of Drums.
In the late 1940’s, Jim served in the Queens Royal Regiment, Royal Army Service Corps and the Indian Army Corps of Clerks.
He had a long, 30 year career as a bus driver and conductor based at Godstone Garage, and served the local 409, 410 and 411 bus routes. Jim would have been a familiar face to many passengers.
Jim and his wife Sheila (nee Knight) lived for many years in Godstone and later, in South Nutfield.
A much respected gentleman, he was always polite and had a lovely sense of humour.
Jim will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
