Tribute to Mavis from across the pond.
The year was 1973, I had just finished my training at Fort Ord Ca. and at my first Duty Station (Emery Barracks, Wurzburg FRG). I was 18 years old and 5000 miles from home, and no Family. Then I met Bob and Mavis, she was the Librarian at the Recreation Center and Bob was a CID agent. I spent a lot of time in the Rec Center where I met them. Mavis would be setting at her desk sipping a cup of tea with milk (which for me was unheard of) LOL. She would greet everyone that entered her domain with a bright and cheery hello how are you today in her cute British accent. Bob spent a lot of time at the center mostly in the Photography Lab. I learned so much from him about Photography. But this is about Mavis and not Bob, but you can’t have one without the other, and even then, they were so much in LOVE They were partners for life. Their Daughter Lynn was my age and we become good friends.
Mavis was a person that always had time or would make time to listen to you about anything good, bad or indifferent. Thinking back on that period in our lives I can’t say that I remember her ever being in a bad mood if she was, she hid it well. For me she kind of became my surrogate mother I could talk to her about anything. I was nothing special and I’m sure I was not the only one that felt this way about Mavis and Bob. I still remember having a home cooked meal instead of mess hall food once in a while.
As life in the Military goes, we all went our own ways and lost contact for many years. Then the cyber age came about and we reconnected on Facebook. We both enjoyed reminiscing about our time in Germany and sharing details of our current life and our families. She always made it a point to send me a Real Christmas card, now I wish I would of done the same but she told me not to as it was to expensive.
I was devastated when I got a call from Lynn telling me Mavis had passed, and now there is another huge hole in my heart that will never be filled.
