Dr Gordon AnthonyMITCHELL19th February 1933 - 9th April 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Mitchell of Rhiwbina, Cardiff, who died peacefully on 9th April 2025, aged 92.

Beloved husband and soulmate to Joan, until her death, and much-loved partner to the late Shirley, Gordon was a devoted father to Deborah, Joanna and Suzanne, a cherished grandfather to Maia, Jamie, Grace and Rory and a proud great-grandfather to Otto. He was also a dearly loved brother to Marian and uncle to Ian and Andrew. His kindness, wisdom and humour touched the lives of all who knew him.

Gordon studied at the University of Exeter and went on to enjoy a long and distinguished career as a university lecturer. An avid mathematician and a passionate believer in lifelong education, Gordon inspired and encouraged others to keep seeking knowledge throughout their lives. A lover of music from an early age, Gordon was a dedicated bandsman in his youth and a talented cornet player. He was an unwavering supporter of Plymouth Argyle Football Club. Gordon's gentle nature extended to his love for animals and the peace he found in the garden, especially tending his runner beans and picking blackberries in the fields.

He will be remembered with great love and admiration by his family and friends. His legacy of kindness, education and optimism lives on in all who had the privilege to know him.

A funeral service will be held on Monday 12th May at 1:00 p.m. at St Isan's Church, Llanishen CF14 5AE, followed by a committal at Thornhill Crematorium, Briwnant Chapel. All who knew Gordon are warmly invited to attend.

No flowers please; donations, if desired, to Cancer Research UK.

Today the weather forecast is for storms. How appropriate because in great literature storms frequently marked the passing of a great man and today we say goodbye to a great man.
Gordon’s connection with our family goes right back to university when he was friends with mum and dad. After dad died mum and Gordon met at university and it turned out that he lived in Cardiff near to where we lived. Mum and John would meet him for coffee when they came to visit and after John’s passing mum and Gordon would meet up. Friendship grew to love and they spent the last 20 odd years together. Gordon became the centre of the family, grandfather to our children, great grandfather to our grandchildren. He loved it when they went to see him and created chaos in Brynteg and drew him pictures that would give Picasso a run for his money.
How can we describe Gordon? - he was servant hearted, loving, gentle , kind, joyous, peace loving, patient, good, faithful and self controlled. It is no coincidence that these are the fruits of the spirit mentioned in Galatians 5. We will miss our regular food and fizz nights, his stories from Cornwall, his infectious laugh and the jokes we had about his tipping habits.
Gordon will be greatly missed but will always be in our hearts . We know that he is now with our Saviour and Lord and one day we will see him again.
Thank you Gordon for adopting us and loving us and being part of our family. Tim and Ann
