I went to school with Melvyn, or Monty as he was then known. I was several years younger than he was. Monty was a prefect when I was in the second year. The school prefects were normally fairly brutal to youngsters and took pleasure in wrecking their Saturdays by giving out detentions. Monty was the opposite. He often used to rub my name out of the detention book on a Friday afternoon.

We lost touch for some years as he did a lot of travelling and our careers diverged. However we did get back in touch in the 90s and remained friends thereafter. I spent time visiting when passing through Lincolnshire and we spoke often on the phone. He was a very erudite and entertaining person. I will miss his laughter.

I'm very sad to hear about the passing of Mel. Mel was a pen pal and friend to me over the last several years. He was always witty, knowledgeable, literary, and good-humoured. I enjoyed meeting him several times in person in New York and then London, and writing every month to him. I knew something was amiss after he didn't write. His friendship was greatly appreciated and he will be missed.
