AlanMURRAY(Professional Football Player and Coach)

After a courageous and stoic battle with illness, Alan Murray passed peacefully on 20th June 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

He was the son of Alan Sr. and Evelyn, beloved brother of Eve-Lynn and Victoria, brother-in-law of Keith and John, cherished uncle of Jonathan and Marc, James and Emily, and the adored friend of many across the world.

Alan was born and raised in Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne. He began his professional playing career in 1969 with Middlesborough Football Club and spent the 70s also playing for Wolves, York City, Brentford, Doncaster Rovers, and Frickley Athletic.

He went on to manage Hartlepool United with Eddie Kyle as his Assistant Manager, where the pair most notably guided Pools to an iconic league promotion. He then went on to manage Darlington FC. Following this, he teamed up with Graeme Souness as Assistant Manager at Southampton, Benfica, Blackburn Rovers, and then Newcastle United, his boyhood club.

He spent his retired years living life to the fullest; playing golf, watching sports, and travelling with friends. He will be greatly missed but remembered with hearts full of joy and gratitude for all that he brought to the lives he touched.

His service and cremation will take place in the Chapel of St. Bede, Teesside Crematorium, on Monday, 13th July at 13:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you kindly donate funds to Walker Central Football Club, Newcastle Upon Tyne, in his honour.

Muz, first of all so very sorry to hear of your passing. Very sad and truly a great person and gentleman has left us. You always had time for everyone and I just want to thank you personally for taking me on loan from Middlesbrough to Darlington for a month when I was a kid trying to find my way in the game. I was young and naive in many ways and you had a way of being to the point and tough, but also being able to put an arm around when needed. Later in life we shared a few drinks with my wife and got to know you on a personal level. Very kind and someone we always enjoyed being around. Love and best wishes to all your loved ones. Rest In Peace till we meet again🙏🏽 Graham Kavanagh💚
