SherriPICKUPIt is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Sherri Pickup, who passed away peacefully on Sunday 2nd July 2023, after a long illness with Parkinson’s stoically borne. Unfailingly selfless and caring, her first words would always be to enquire after a visitor’s wellbeing rather than discuss her own. She leaves behind her husband of 52 years, David, and three children. Dearly beloved Mum of Ian, Sarah and Sam, Sister to Heather, Sister-in-Law to Bernard and Rosie, Auntie to Katherine and Stephen and devoted Grandmother to Megan, Ronnie, Eden and Fiora, Sherri will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all her family and friends. She loved nature and history and could often be found exploring and appreciating ancient churches, castles and ruins in the countryside from Rossendale and beyond with family. Many well-thumbed pictures depict her about to jettison cherished husband off a windswept battlement or into a tranquil Welsh lake, or holding up a weather-beaten standing stone, displaying her wry and gentle sense of humour. She also had a strong connection with Liverpool, achieving a Degree with Honours in Psychology at the University of Liverpool and making lifelong friends in Geraldine, Elaine and Maria during her time there. Many fond hours were spent with David in Sefton Park and Lark Lane during their courtship. Sherri started out her career at Brockhall Hospital in Whalley teaching children with learning difficulties, before moving on to be a teaching assistant at the local high school. Before retiring she was also of wonderful service to her community as one of the team at Haslingden Sports Centre, caring for youngsters in the creche and (self-proclaimed) ‘grannies’ on walks for health alike, and many people in Haslingden and Helmshore knew and respected her from this work. Provisional arrangements for the funeral are that the cremation will be held on Thursday 13th July at 3pm at Accrington Crematorium. Please contact Johnson Durning & Woods Funeral Directors for confirmation of dates and venues. Tel 01706 214498. Address: 4-8 Pleasant St, Haslingden, BB4 5LG. Family flowers only please.
