Penelope AntheaROBERTSDeath of Penny Roberts
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Penny Roberts, at the age of 79, on 14th September 2025, at Estuary House Care Home, Speke. She was the beloved daughter of Alec and Win Roberts, of Woolton Village, sister to Richard and Nick, and well-loved cousin to Catharine, Margaret, Gillian and Hazel. Nick came back to England with his wife, Gillian, and their children, Ben, and twins, Jessica and Alex, to visit on a regular basis after moving to Australia in the early 1970s. Over the years with families of their own, Penny's niece and nephews made every effort to connect with Penny by post, zoom and even face to face, during the years Penny lived in different care homes in Liverpool.
Penny studied history at Leicester University and later got a teaching certificate at Hull, which enabled her to teach history at Quarry Bank School, the school where her father, Alec, had taught the same subject, in the 1950s, when Penny was young. She then moved on to adult teaching in Manchester and worked on archaeological digs. She became Education Officer at the Liverpool Garden Festival, in the early 1980s, then moved to Coxwold, Yorkshire, with her partner, Howard Warhurst. These were happy times. A further move to Dorset, turned out to be not so happy and her life there became more difficult. Her wish was to return to Liverpool, which she did in 2002.
Penny had many talents, both as an artist and chef, as well as a teacher of children who had different needs. She was an excellent researcher. Penny had a good rapport with my boys and my niece and nephew and a great love of animals. She was good company and she will be much missed.
