Amazing teacher. Gave me a life long love of history. Taught us to think, taught us to question.

So very sorry for your loss. I worked for Ian at the exams board. He was a character, never a dull moment.

As a pupil at Walbottle, I knew him as I knew him as 'Mr Roberts'. He as a real character -- wore a deerstalker, had (I think) a small farm?
Shortly after I started at Walbottle in '78, there was a history field trip to Catton for a week. In the meetings beforehand, he declared;
"There will be no smoking! If I smoke my pipe that's different..."
Other than that he never taught me directly, but our paths crossed in other events. He was one of those teachers who seemed to know, and have time for, everyone.

A good man. RIP
Paul Vile
