Byron (Birendra) was my neighbour and friend for 26 years, and we are deeply saddened by his passing. Over the years — especially during the pandemic — I spent many hours in his company. We often talked late into the night about films and politics, sharing laughter over the latest antics of President Trump.
Byron was a great admirer of David Attenborough, whom he regarded as “the only person worth watching on television.” He often spoke fondly of his father, a brilliant engineer, and would recall with amusement how his father had advised him to become a doctor, believing he wasn’t quite clever enough to be an engineer himself.
Byron could sometimes be difficult to deal with — forthright in his opinions and unafraid to speak his mind — but that was part of his charm and what made our conversations so memorable. Beneath that sometimes prickly exterior was a sharp intellect and a loyal heart. I was saddened that his relationship with his children had broken down, though it was clear he cared for them deeply.
He will be fondly remembered — a thoughtful, engaging, and complex man whose company I will greatly miss.
