My first meeting with Peter happened over forty years ago when we were both probationary teachers. Our place of work, which Peter quickly dubbed “Sunshine Desserts”, gave us the afternoon off in order to attend our introductory welcome at County Hall. The bus journey to County Hall was a long one but the time passed quickly as Peter entertained me with his anecdotes about the adventures of Reggie Perrin. By the time we got to Durham we were both using phrases from C.J., Reggie’s boss, that started with “I didn’t get where I am today by…”. Needless to say, our memorable day being accepted as newly qualified teachers also marked the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
Peter went on to become a family friend and we will always remember his rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” Peter had a fine singing voice and he sang the tribute to the King of Rock and Roll with great enthusiasm. His microphone was a wooden spoon and his performance was brilliant.
Peter had a very clever wit, he was kind, caring and lifted the spirits of everyone he met. His sense of humour was infectious and time spent in his company was always filled with laughter. We will dearly miss Peter and feel honoured to have called him friend.
He will always be “The King”.
