Dr. Roger StuartTHOMASDirector of Planning and Marketing at Swansea University sadly passed away on the 1st of February 2026.

Roger was a keen skier and was extremely fit. He fought incredibly hard following heart surgery but sadly lost this valiant battle.

I too shared a flat in Mumbles with Roger while we were doing historical research. Even then, Roger stood out, not only as a dogged and perceptive historian, but also a sharply-tailored bon viveur and wit. He was always so fit, caving, marathon-running and downhill skiing.. Much missed already.

It's so sad to hear of Roger's passing. I fondly remember him when he was Director of Planning at Swansea University. He was always very sincere with a warm and compassionate nature. Rest in Peace Roger.

I met Roger on our first day at UC Swansea. We remained close friends throughout and, for two years, shared a flat in the Mumbles.
Roger was a fine historian with published work to his credit. I shall remember him for his kindness, the fun we shared and for his willingness to help, whether through cave rescue, or on one tragic occasion, his willingness to join the rescuers at Aberfan.
