Alan was parachuted in as Head of Computer Science at Keele University after the retirement of Prof. Colin Reeves, and was instrumental in persuading me to move to Keele as a new professor in 1991. We worked well together, including spending many hours planning how to persuade our wily Vice-Chancellor (Brian Fender) to provide more support for Computer Science. Alan's office was always a comfort to me, I am untidy, but his level of untidiness was monumental, despite which, he could always dive into some tottering pile of papers to find the relevant document. An enthusiast in all that he took on, and most especially about the history of clocks. May he rest in peace.
