IngridVAN WAGNERIngrid Fromen Van Wagner, was born 19th August, 1941 in New York City, and passed 12th April, 2026 at St. Thomas' Hospital, London.

Granddaughter of storied adventurer Lt Col Holman James, known by his stage name Fred Lindsay, and daughter of Joan James and Gunnar Fromen of British and Swedish origin respectively.

During her early childhood in Westchester County, NY, Ingrid focused on many activities including ballet and diving before transforming into a statuesque, strawberry blonde head-turner who was noted for her beauty and poise.

Ingrid spent her youth between New York and Puerto Rico, before attending boarding school at Stuart Hall in Virginia. Upon graduating in 1959, she attended Stetson University in Florida where she met J. Paul Cheek Jr. and became a young Navy wife. With her husband away at sea, she continued her education, eventually completing her B.A. in Education from the University of North Carolina in 1965. Her proudest accomplishments from this time were her two daughters, Lisa and Samantha.

While her first marriage proved untenable, her second, of over 50 years, flourished until the end. After meeting Ingrid on a blind date in London, Jack Van Wagner swept her off her feet and across the globe. Together they lived in the USA, UK, Pakistan, Singapore, Indonesia, Turkey and the UAE. There in Abu Dhabi during the 1980s, Ingrid founded a boutique printing business, eventually grossing more at the time than her husband.

And no matter where they lived temporarily, Ingrid called Kensington & Chelsea home, always owning a residence in the borough where her heart eternally resides.

A true Leo, Kings Road was her catwalk where she expressed her polished, sometimes quirky, yet carefully cultivated and refined sense of style. She loved nothing better than gliding along on a sunny day to see and be seen.

Enormous importance was given to building and sustaining family ties across multi-continental separations. Ingrid enjoyed her status as matriarch of an internationally diasporic family spread across North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

Ingrid was a charming extrovert with a curious and sincere interest in people. Her wide circle of friends was as eclectic as she was and she warmed to everyone like family.

She held very high personal standards and believed wholeheartedly in PPA days (if you know, you know).

Health, fitness and medical advancements were keen interests. Ingrid was dedicated to her Pilates, walking and personal training sessions. She shared her knowledge and genuinely wanted everyone to live their longest and best life possible.

An ardent and passionate enthusiast of culture and art, Ingrid's career included working in PR at Warner Brothers Studios, within commercial galleries, and as an independent artists' agent. She was a long-standing member of the Chelsea Arts Club.

Ingrid is survived by husband Jack, daughters Lisa (Chris) and Samantha (Roby), step-son Christopher (Jodi), nephew Ashaman (Pastora), nieces Courtney (James) and Blake (Sandy), her younger brothers Erik and Gunnar (Pat) and her beloved rescued pomapoo, Howard.

Ingrid, we remember you with fondest love and gentle grace.

I’ve known Ingrid for over forty years, big heart, art lover, world traveller. Where do I start this long friendship……. She sold my artwork in Abu Dhabi and Turkey. We always had so much to talk about all the time. Then Samantha came and then Lara was born (now 40). We spent every Boxing Day together and we loved her crumpets with black pepper. Our Christmas tree is inspired by her tree with items gathered from every country we visit. We went to so many exhibitions, to Hyde Park and to Lebanese restaurants. So many places hold memories for me. I am thankful for all the photos we took and I have so much from her many travels. We both loved the same things.
I’m lucky that we spoke the week before and I want to believe she is still here listening and laughing. Now Samantha is coming back we will continue to search and inspire in memory of all the things Ingrid loved doing best. I need to cling onto that for a bit longer…. You will always be in my heart.

When I remember Ingrid, the first image of seeing her was from my upstairs window. It was Melton Court. With a long tail of blonde hair pulled up and falling down at her back and some flowing dress, costume, swaying under her statuesque frame, she glided.
Yes, Ingrid was always a vision.
But it was her heart and head that made that strong persona of gentle grace so special.
Ingrid was cheerfully inquisitive of all around her; the adults, children, dogs and the state of affairs of the global news. She was a serious girl but loved a good laugh and a good meal.
Ingrid was the most thoughtful friend . She fed me when I was weak and hurting, bolstered my confidence when I was depressed and always made me feel better about my strengths and abilities.
She was the most feminine of feminist and yet always shouted her praise and admiration and thanks for her wonderful, generous husband Jack. She loved her Jack and Jack loved her. They were the most adorable couple who were always a delight to see.
My children adored her and always found her glamorous and in an endearing way, and we are so sad not to see her at Otto’s wedding.
She was a big part of our broken family and always so selfless and caring.
Ingrid we love you and will always hold your example of generosity and grace in our hearts and memories; noble Ingrid.

We met Ingrid and Jack early 1980 in Abu Dhabi during the years that both our families lived a transitional life.
We forged a friendship that was to last until now despite the fact that we were not able to meet very often.
Living in London since 2011 and near to each other brought us all an enjoyable time together.
Today, we are left with sadness but also with happy memories of good times and much laughter.
Rest in Peace dear friend.
Our deepest condolences to Jack, Samantha, Lisa and family.

I always has a soecial feeling for my dear cousin Ingrid despite the physical distance which kind of impaired à closer relationship. However it was always a joy to see her and admire her beauty and elegance and the fact that she was always keen to know more about me and my family. Also she was very open minded and always ready to share a good laugh.
You will be missed eternaly.
Love, Richard

It is rare to find a friendship that spans more than 40 years and two continents. From the early days in Abu Dhabi to most recently in London, Ingrid was more than a family friend; she was a regular presence in our lives. Her warm, lively spirit is clearly reflected in dearest Samantha, who is a remarkable woman, just like her mother. Sending my love and deepest condolences.
