I was very sad to hear about the passing of Joy and Hubert. I knew Joy many years ago in the late 1970s. I worked in Henry Whites Fashion House in High Street Newcastle-under-Lyme on the cosmetics and perfumery department with Joy who was the buyer. Those were such lovely days working there, I was an 18 year old ( the youngest on the shop floor) enjoying every day working with Joy and Ann Bates too. We worked together until I think 1980? The store closed sadly and a number of us there got positions at other shops in the town, I went to Peter Richards and Joy went to Brownings Chemist. Joy was a fantastic woman with high standards and very supportive. Hugh would drop her off early in the morning on his way to work in Eccleshall, she would dry her hair on the counter with a cup of coffee, when I arrived she would be finishing her make up on the Charles of the Ritz counter just in time for opening. Joy’s favourite perfume was Miss Dior then. I look back at Newcastle and how it used to be then, very different from now which is sad. I think of Joy with great fondness and miss those times. She was a special lady. God bless. Marie Smith ( nee Jackson)
