I knew Bob as both a colleague and a dear friend for many years. Our paths first crossed when he worked on behalf of all the Teesside colleges, and later, more closely, during his time at Stockton & Billingham College, later Stockton Riverside College. When the college moved to its new site, Bob served as Property Manager, and I can say without hesitation that his dedication, calm competence, and sheer hard work were absolutely central to making that transition as smooth as it was.
Bob wasn’t just a valued and reliable member of staff; he was the kind of colleague everyone hopes to have, steady, good humoured, and endlessly supportive. People were simply drawn to him. With his easy-going manner and relaxed approach to life, he made even the busiest days feel lighter. You couldn’t ask to meet a nicer man.
My memories of Bob stretch far beyond the workplace. I think fondly of the many social occasions we shared with his lovely wife, Eth, gatherings that continued into retirement. We had great fun at murder mystery parties, including one unforgettable evening when Bob was cast as the bad guy. He was, of course, the least suspicious man in the room, making his “guilt” all the more hilarious. None of us could keep a straight face.
I will always treasure the memories of time spent with Bob and Eth in Italy, on the beautiful shores of Lake Como. Those were happy days, full of laughter, good company, and the kind of ease that only comes with true friendship.
And it feels right to mention one more thing that mattered to Bob: his loyalty to Sunderland AFC. He leaves this world knowing that his beloved team has secured another season in the Premier League, a fitting comfort for a man who supported them through every high and low. That would have brought him a quiet smile.
Bob will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, especially Eth and the family, who will feel his loss most keenly.
Rest in Peace Bob. We all loved you, and we always will.
