The Love Parks Week Campaign is delivered annually by Keep Britain Tidy with the help of the People’s Postcode Lottery. This year it takes place from 28th July to the 6th August. The campaign celebrates parks and green spaces, and the volunteers and workers who look after them year round.

Love Parks Week also provides an opportunity to investigate any issues with local parks. A recent study has shown that many women feel their local parks are unsafe for them. Practical guidelines have been launched to help park managers, local authorities, police and community groups to tackle this issue.

The campaign aims to encourage as many people as possible to get out into the great outdoors and take advantage of their local park, whether going for a picnic, using the playground facilities, exercising, or meeting friends.

Here are some reasons to visit your local park:

Boost mental health
Spending time in nature has been shown to boost mental health, increase creativity, and provide a sense of calm. Just spending a short time outside can help to reduce your stress levels and leave you feeling much happier.

Connect with nature
Local parks are a sanctuary for both humans and wildlife, allowing us to reconnect with the natural world. Whether it’s the majestic trees offering shade on a hot summer’s day, the vibrant flowers colouring the landscape, or the soothing sounds of birds chirping, parks offer an escape into the beauty of nature.

Exercise
Regular exercise can improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress levels and enhance our overall well-being, and parks provide an excellent place to exercise. Walking, jogging, cycling and playing sports are just a few of the types of exercise that can be done in your local park.

Sense of community
Parks serve as meeting points for people of all ages and backgrounds, and provide a sense of community to people who visit often, especially when regular events are held there for the local community. These gatherings promote social interaction, whether between friends, families or the community as a whole.

Love Parks Week also offers an opportunity to highlight the importance of preserving and protecting our green spaces. Parks provide habitats for a diverse range of plants and animals, playing a vital role in environmental conservation. It is important when taking time out in your local park to remember to respect the environment; use the bins provided for your litter, and if they are full or you can’t find one, take your litter home with you.
