Movie soundtracks have given us some of the biggest selling songs of all time, and it’s always the ones packed full of emotion that seem to strike a chord with the audience. Here’s a list of seven different songs from movie soundtracks that you could play at a funeral.

‘My Heart Will Go On’ from Titanic (Celine Dion)

The tenth biggest selling physical single of all time has to make the list, especially as the lyrics are so poignant when you’ve lost a loved one. It has certainly been overplayed over the years, but that doesn’t mean that the message of love persevering won’t hit home for someone.

‘You'll Be In My Heart’ from Tarzan (Phil Collins)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Disney’s Tarzan, but this track was mentioned a few times when I was doing my research, and I can see why. It’s another song about love persevering, but this time it’s more about a love that stands up to whatever life has to throw at it.

‘Bygone Days’ from Porco Rosso (Joe Hisaishi)

This piece of music comes from a classic animated movie from Studio Ghibli. It’s reflective, while also being upbeat. It’s not the right tone for every funeral, but if you’re looking for something that will make people smile as they look back on happier times, then this is a beautiful track.

‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ from The Wizard of Oz (Judy Garland)

Regardless of whether this was featured in a movie or not, this song is always going to be one that plays regularly at funerals, thanks to its peaceful sound and hopeful nature. For an alternative spin, you could always try the exceptional version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole.

‘Remember Me’ from Coco (Anthony Gonzalez and Ana Ofelia Murguía)

A few different versions of this song exist throughout this film about death and remembrance. This one is only short, but it’s sure to bring a tear to your eye as you think of your lost loved one.

Suite from Forrest Gump (Alan Silvestri)

Forrest Gump is a movie that celebrates the ups and downs of life, which perfectly suits the reflective nature of a funeral. This score would be perfect to accompany a moment of quiet reflection or prayer.

'I Will Always Love You' from The Bodyguard (Whitney Houston)

It’s only fitting to end the list on one of the biggest selling songs of all time. The song is about parting ways and saying goodbye, but also letting people know that love will endure. It’s a classic tear jerker, with a big emotional punch.
