Each October, people and organisations around the world come together to raise awareness of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, often shortened to ADHD. At Funeral Notices, we recognise that awareness is not just about labels. It is about understanding people’s lived experiences, celebrating their strengths, and supporting families and friends with compassion.

What is ADHD Awareness Month?

According to the ADHD Awareness Month Coalition, the goal is simple yet powerful. The month exists to provide reliable information and resources that help people with ADHD to thrive, and to give families, carers, educators, and employers practical guidance they can use. The initiative encourages the wider community to challenge myths, reduce stigma, and share trustworthy knowledge that reflects the latest understanding of ADHD.

Throughout October, you will see campaigns that explain what ADHD is and what it is not. There is a focus on the day to day challenges people may face, from attention and organisation to emotional regulation, alongside the many ways individuals with ADHD lead fulfilling, successful lives. The Coalition also highlights contributions from experts and from community members who share their art, stories, videos, and even memes. These creative efforts make learning accessible and uplifting for everyone.

ADHD has many faces

ADHD does not look the same for everyone. Experiences vary across ages, genders, and backgrounds. Some people are diagnosed in childhood, while others receive a diagnosis much later in life. For many, structure and routines are essential. Others find they thrive when they can use creativity, movement, and flexibility. By spotlighting diverse voices and perspectives, awareness activities challenge stereotypes and encourage empathy.

Sharing lived experiences, whether through a personal tribute, a creative piece, or a short video, helps to dismantle myths and foster a more inclusive community. It is a reminder that the people we remember and honour are multifaceted, with talents, passions, and stories that deserve to be told.
How you can show support this October
  • Learn and share credible information: Visit adhdawarenessmonth.org for up to date resources designed to help people thrive with ADHD.
  • Listen to stories: Personal reflections, art, and memorial tributes can deepen understanding and reduce stigma.
  • Use inclusive, respectful language: Focus on strengths and individuality when speaking about someone’s life and legacy.
  • Offer practical kindness: Flexibility with communication and expectations can make a real difference to those living with ADHD, including people who are grieving.
  • Support community efforts: Engage with awareness events, amplify informative posts, or support relevant charities and support groups.
As we mark ADHD Awareness Month, let us not only celebrate the many ways people with ADHD enrich their families and communities, but also let us choose patience, kindness, and understanding, so that everyone feels seen and supported.
